IBM Cloud - Structured Ideas

This portal is to open public enhancement requests against IBM Cloud and its products. To view all of your ideas submitted to IBM, create and manage groups of Ideas, or create an idea explicitly set to be either visible by all (public) or visible only to you and IBM (private), use the IBM Unified Ideas Portal (https://ideas.ibm.com).

Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

IPv6 support in IBM Cloud VPC and services (like ROKS)

IPv6 is the standard for address space finalized a long time ago. Additionally, services on top of IPv6 infrastructure (for our need, OpenShift in this case) now support IPv6 addressing and SDN as of 2021. IBM Cloud VPC should support IPv6 at least as an IaaS layer, which it does not currently: https://cloud.ibm.com/docs/vpc?topic=vpc-limitations. While it would be even better to support IPv6 in subsequent networking services (load balancing, CNIs for ROKS), at the very least a lack of IPv6 support for virtual servers and bare metal services prevent adoption of IPv6 for an IT organization dependent on IBM Cloud VPC.

Thinking simply of how it should work, a dedicated global address space for IPv6 addresses (of which I assume IBM has an allocation already registered) should be assignable to interfaces for VSI and bare metal. Considering the potential address space (I assume IBM overall has a /48 for IPv6, which is 1 septillion addresses), there should be plenty of addresses to support a global unique address for all VSI and bare metal services across IBM Cloud.
